Nestled into a hillside in a rural
Maryland area, this earth-covered
home has only a thin skin of traditional
materials. Made entirely of concrete,
the structure was placed in a single
pour lasting 12 hours.

The roof was designed to support
2 feet of earth. There are skylights
at the rear of the house to allow light
in. This structure is so energy efficient
it consumes one fifth the energy
required to heat and cool a conven-
tional home of comparable size.

After 20 years since completion,
the house is absolutely water tight.
